Learning to Read the Quran as an Adult Beginner

Hidaya Online

A practical starting guide for adults learning Quran reading, from discussing your current level to arranging private lessons and manageable home practice.

Describe your starting point honestly

Beginning as an adult can involve uncertainty about what you are expected to know. Tell the tutor what you can currently recognise or read and where you need help. You may remember letters from childhood, read some familiar passages or be starting with no reading experience. None of those descriptions needs an apology. A useful assessment lets the teacher choose appropriate work and gives you permission to ask the basic questions that matter to your learning.

Ask for an explanation of the plan

After listening to your reading, the teacher should be able to explain the proposed starting exercises and why they fit. Ask what you will practise in class, what you will review at home and how earlier skills will be revisited. If the learning materials feel unfamiliar, ask the tutor to show you how to use them. A clear short-term target is easier to act on than a broad instruction to become fluent or memorise a large amount.

Choose a setting where you can ask questions

Consider whether private lessons, a preferred teaching language or a male or female tutor would help you feel comfortable participating. Explain those preferences to the coordinator before booking. During the lesson, say when you cannot hear a difference or do not understand an instruction. You do not need to hide uncertainty to appear more advanced. Agree on a correction style that allows you to attempt the exercise again and understand the teacher’s feedback.

Build practice around your existing responsibilities

Choose a small, realistic opportunity to revisit the assigned work between lessons. Keep the text, lesson notes and any approved audio easy to access. If your work hours vary, explain that before committing to a regular class slot. When you miss practice, tell the tutor what was completed so the next task can be adjusted. Avoid adding a large independent syllabus that competes with the skill your teacher is currently helping you develop.

Notice specific changes in your reading

Compare your present reading with your own earlier starting point, rather than another learner’s pace. Ask which examples you can now attempt independently, where you need fewer prompts and what still needs correction. Keep a brief record of the next target. Progress may include becoming more comfortable asking for help as well as changes in reading. A fixed promise of fluency within a certain number of weeks is less useful than an assessment tied to your actual work.
